Our DDI team recently attended the Portland Association of Health Underwriters Healthcare CEO Forum. This is an annual conference where leaders from local health systems, insurance companies and benefits consultants gather for a roundtable discussion on the most pressing health insurance issues. As usual, there was much to discuss! What are the implications of an ACA repeal? Is the health insurance market shifting to Consumerism and HSA’s? How will mergers in the insurance marketplace affect our options? How will we afford the increase in use of new specialty drugs? What’s going to happen to Obamacare? (important update below)
These questions and more prompted a great conversation amongst our local leaders. In general, there was agreement that little has been done or will be done to tackle the true cost drivers of health insurance (i.e., lack of transparency of actual cost of health care services, aging of Americans, lack of change in hospital / provider payment methods, $40 billion processed food industry making Americans sick). As health insurance gets more and more complicated, one thing remains simple, you need health insurance advisors you can rely on to guide you and your employees through the health plan maze.
