Alternatives to COBRA Continuation Coverage:

DDI provides benefits administration to all of our insurance clients over 20 employees. We include the following information with each COBRA notification. Health insurance options are complicated and we are here to guide your former employees in the direction that best meets their needs.

  • Individual health plans are available within 60 days of your loss of employer health coverage.  These plans give you the flexibility to choose an insurance carrier and plan for your individual needs.  There are many options available.  Rates are based on your residential zip code, age of enrollees, tobacco usage, and the type of plan you choose.
    • In addition, many people are eligible for Advanced Premium Tax Credits (subsidies) when applying for coverage under the Marketplace (www.healthcare.gov). This route can reduce your monthly premiums by offsetting the monthly cost with assistance, based on household size and income.
  • Medicaid: This is an option for low income households. These plans have no premiums and low copayments.  Contact DDI for more info or go to www.healthcare.gov to see if you qualify.
  •  Medicare:  This may be an option if you are 65 years old or older.  You can learn more at www.medicare.gov or contact Annette, who is trained in Medicare, at DDI, annette@ddibenefits.com.

Remember, if you allow your 60-day COBRA election period to lapse, it cannot be extended (you will lose your right to elect an extension of the health coverage) under your employer’s Group Health Plan.
